Danish museums, primarily art museums, can apply for support for the acquisition of works by Danish and foreign artists. Museums outside of Denmark can apply for support for the acquisition of works by Danish artists.

Application deadline

Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis. For specific deadlines, see under ‘Deadlines and meetings’. In connection with the purchase of works at auction, an urgent application can be submitted.

Application process

  1. An application for support is submitted through the foundation’s online application system.
  2. The New Carlsberg Foundation’s board assesses the applications received. The applications are either approved (yielding partial or full support) or declined.
  3. The applicant receives notification of the result through the foundation’s online application system. Expect a processing time of a few weeks after the board meeting.

Criteria

The New Carlsberg Foundation puts emphasis on the following aspects:

  • The application must concern one or more important works that make a significant and relevant contribution to the museum’s collection.

What does the grant cover?

Applicants can apply for financial support for the acquisition of works of art.

The foundation does not support costs for shipping, insurance, framing and/or conservation in connection with acquisitions either in Denmark or abroad.

The application must contain:

  • A statement describing how the acquisition would contribute to the museum’s collection and how it is aligned with the museum’s acquisition policy, as well as a description of the work’s position and significance within the artist’s practice and production, extending to a total of no more than two standard pages of 2,400 characters with spaces.
  • If multiple works are applied for at once, provide a list ranking them in order of priority.
  • Details on the work of art (artist, title, year, materials, dimensions).
  • A photo of the work(s).
  • A quote from the seller (gallery, artist or others).
  • If the work is acquired from a private individual, an independent, unbiased professional evaluation of the work must be attached (this does not apply if the work is purchased directly from the artist, unless the price is higher than DKK 500,000)
  • When acquiring works by living artists, the application must include a CV for said artist, extending to a maximum of one standard page.
  • A financing plan, including information on any co-financing and other funding already applied for/granted (if applicable).

Any additional material attached to the application will not be included in the assessment.

Reporting

The foundation will request the successful applicant to submit a photo of the work, master data and information on the final purchase price after the acquisition has been made.
