Who and what may be applied for

  • Art museums outside Denmark may apply for acquisition of works by Danish artists
  • Danish art museums may apply for acquisition of works by Danish and international artists

The Foundation does not support costs for shipping, insurance, framing and/or conservation in connection with acquisitions.

There are 5 deadlines in 2026: 
5 January, 9 March, 4 May, 10 August, 12 October

Application process

  1. Submit the application through the foundation’s online application system.
  2. The Board assesses the application which is then either approved (yielding partial or full support) or rejected.
  3. Notification on the result is given through the online application system.

Art for museums – acquisitions

Criteria

The work/s applied for must be significant and contribute significantly and relevantly to the museum’s collection.

The application must include

Applications that do not meet the requirements below will not be considered.

  • A single PDF file of max. 10 pages
    All application material must be compiled and submitted as one single PDF file of no more than 10 pages.

The (max.) 10 pages must include:

  • Work information: Artist, title, year, materials, dimensions.
  • Photo of the work.
  • Statement on how the acquisition contributes to the museum’s collection and acquisition policy. Max. 1 page.
  • Statement on the work’s place and significance within the artist’s practice and production. Max. 1 page.
  • Offer from the seller – gallery, artist, or others.
  • If applying for several works: A prioritized list.
  • If the work is acquired from a private individual: An independent appraisal of the work. However, this is not required if the work is purchased directly from the artist at a price below DKK 500,000.
  • CV for living artist(s) of max. one page. A CV is not required for deceased artists.
  • Financing plan. The financing plan must show how funds for the acquisition will be secured. Include the New Carlsberg Foundation as well as self-financing and any other named foundations that have been or will be approached.

Reporting

The Foundation will request the successful applicant to submit a photo of the work, master data and information on the final purchase price after the acquisition has been made.
