What can you apply for?

Support can be granted for two types of art projects:

  1. New site specific art projects created for a particular location eg buildings, urban spaces, or landscapes
  2. Donation of artworks from New Carlsberg Foundation’s holdings

For both types of projects, the Foundation actively participates in the development, and it is the Foundation that:

  • Decides which type of art project will be granted. Applicants may however indicate their preferred type.
  • Selects relevant artists and works. Applicants must not have chosen an artist or artwork in advance.
  • Organises and finances the art project.

Application deadline

There are three annual deadlines in 2026: 5 January, 4 May, 7 September
More on deadlines and response times see this page.

Application process

  1. The applicant submits the application via the Foundation’s online system.
  2. The Board reviews the applications and either expresses interest or rejects them.
  3. The applicant receives a response via the online system.
See response times under the respective deadlines here.

Criteria

New Carlsberg Foundation emphasises that:

  • The location for the art project is widely accessible.
  • The art has a special potential for the site and its users.
  • The applicant is prepared to engage in process and dialogue with the Foundation and the artist.
  • The applicant can cover costs for preparing the site where the art will be installed, including related construction work.
  • The applicant can present a realistic timeline if the art project is to be integrated into a building project.
  • The applicant has not selected an artist or artworks in advance.

The application must include

Applications that do not meet the following requirements will not be processed:

  • One PDF file of max. 10 pages
All application material must be compiled and attached as a single PDF file of max. 10 pages.

The 10 pages must include:

  • A description of the location and its users.
  • A description of what the art should contribute.
  • Images, visualisations, floor plans, maps, or similar of the location.
  • A description of the applicant, the organisation, and the decision-makers behind the application.
  • If relevant: Documentation or explanation of necessary permits.
  • A timeline for implementation if the art is to be integrated into a building project.

If the Foundation expresses interest

Process: New site specific art projects created for a particular location:

  • The Foundation proposes an artist.
  • If the recipient institution accepts, the artist is invited to prepare a sketch.
  • If the sketch is approved by both the Foundation and the recipient institution, the art project is realised.
  • Timeline: The process from expressed interest to approved sketch typically takes 6–12 months. This is especially important if the art is to be integrated into a building project with its own timeline.
  • Read more about terms for donation of art projects.

Process: Donation of artworks from the Foundation’s holdings:

  • The Foundation curates a selection of artworks and prepares an installation plan.
  • If the recipient institution approves the proposal, the installation is carried out.
  • Note that there are special terms associated with donation of art from the Foundation regarding operation and maintenance, etc. Read more about terms for donation of art projects.
